First new Contest 42CS performance yachts soon to be launched at Amsterdam in-water Boat Show
Contest Yachts in the Netherlands is close to completing the first Contest 42CS, due for launching in July. Two months later, the second in this exciting series concept will roll off the slipway and the third has already been sold. The Contest 42CS design is fulfilling its brief of appealing equally to experienced families with children as it does to sailors seeking sailing performance and superior comfort.
The latest generation of Contests was created in response to growing demands for a Contest in this size range with a twin steering and aft cockpit layout. The 42CS is part of a continuous upgrading of the Contest fleet range, which extends right up to the Contest 72CS and also includes a 52-foot motoryacht. The first two flagships for this new standard in family performance cruising have now had their decks completed and the interiors are currently being fitted.
“The Contest 42CS is ideal for people interested in acquiring a quality sailboat,” says Contest Yachts managing director Arjen Conijn. “At the same time, the superior performance also appeals to people seeking a more intimate cruising experience. In fact, the aesthetic lines of the Contest 42CS are striking a chord among folk from every stage of life. And the first two examples will showcase the amazing sense of spaciousness her owners will enjoy inside and out, regardless of why they decide to buy a 42CS.”
Three into one
Another fascinating aspect of the design for the Contest 42CS is that three distinctive exterior layout options are available. The Shorthanded version features a central winch in the cockpit located next to the steering wheel from which the mainsail can be operated. This allows the owner to go sailing on his/her own and enjoy some peace and quiet on the water.
The second option is the Cruising exterior layout, which offers maximum space in the cockpit. The mainsail traveller is located on the cabin roof, while the mainsail lines run via a German Mainsheet system to winches in the cockpit.
Last but not least, the Performance version of the Contest 42CS has the mainsail traveller recessed in the cockpit floor just in front of the helm. This maximises the speed potential thanks to the optimal mainsail trim. The first Contest 42CS will have this set-up, including 3DL sails and a carbon mast.
Both the Shorthanded and the Cruising version can also be fitted with a lounging cockpit, with the seating area separated from the helm by means of a circular partition.
Interior choices
There are also a wide range of interior layout options created in partnership with the Amsterdam-based interior architects Wetzels Brown Partners. Many different requirements can be met with three layouts for the aft and foredeck areas and five for the amidships section of the boat. Key choices within this remit include whether to fit four or six sleeping berths, where to locate the galley on the port or starboard side, the size of the owner’s cabin and the amount of storage to set aside for sails and the like.
This impressive flexibility offered for both the exterior and the interior, coupled with the unrivalled vacuum technology construction and the finely detailed finishing for which the Contest yard is renowned, make the Contest 42CS a very special yacht indeed.
