Congratulations, another new record for the TU Delft Hydro Motion Team!

Congratulations! It’s another new record for the student TU Delft Hydro Motion Team, sponsored and guided by Contest Yachts, for being the first ever fully hydrogen-powered boat to cross the North Sea from the Netherlands to the UK… and it’s a foiler, too!

Previously we have shared the team’s annual journey to Monaco for the prestigious Monaco Energy Boat Challenge but for 2024 this year’s Hydro Motion Team switched direction to attempt and set this lone record North Sea crossing. A highly technical and challenging achievement from a spectacularly talented young team at the start of their careers.

Setting off from Breskens, NL at 10.15 on 11 July, the unique student designed and constructed, hydrogen fuel cell powered foiler arrived in Ramsgate, UK 400km distant at 22.45. A test of endurance as much as technology. The sated mission was “to propel the maritime and energy industries towards a sustainable future”. We say they have… and we send our congratulations.
