Cocos keeling is rightly advertised as “Australia’s last unspoilt paradise in the Azure waters of the Indian Ocean, kissed by the sun and caressed by fragrant trade winds”.
The group of five Islands, rising out of the 5 km deep Indian Ocean, surrounds a turquoise lagoon. Dolphins and sharks (small ones) swim around. Palm trees are everywhere. The islands are connected by a ferry. A Malay community lives on Home Island. West Island has an airport (landing strip) and some holiday accommodation. Nature is beautiful. Facilities are primitive. Supermarkets on Home and West Island obtain their supplies on Fridays. Then some fresh produce is available. A well protected anchorage is next to Direction Island. On Direction island there is nothing but a BBQ place, conveniently used by the sailors at anchor.
This WayPoint is a good place to wait for stable weather before crossing the 2300 miles Indian Ocean to Mauritius.
